Geomembranes are a crucial component in managing tailings dams in the mining industry. The use of geomembranes in tailings dam management has gained importance in recent years, as the mining industry has faced increasing scrutiny and regulation due to concerns about the potential environmental impacts of mining operations.


What is a Tailing Dam?


A tailings dam typically comprises an earthen embankment, a drainage system, and a protective layer called a "liner system. Tailings dams are used to store the waste material produced during the mining process, and geomembranes prevent the release of this material into the environment by acting as a barrier between the tailings and the surrounding soil and groundwater. Geomembranes are often used as the primary component of the liner system, as they are effective at preventing the passage of liquids and gases.


Types Of Geomembranes Used in Tailing Dam


However there are many types of geomembranes, but two main types of geomembranes are used in tailings dam management: high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). HDPE geomembranes are known for their high strength and durability and are often used in tailings dams' bottom and side slopes. LLDPE geomembranes, on the other hand, are known for their high flexibility and tear resistance and are often used in the upper slopes of tailings dams.

1: The use of advanced composite geomembranes that combine multiple layers to enhance durability, chemical resistance, and ease of installation.


2: Using geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), GCLs comprise two layers of geotextile fabric, and a layer of bentonite clay is sandwiched in between. Bentonite clay is highly absorbent and can retain water efficiently, which makes it an effective barrier against the movement of liquids. When combined with a geomembrane, GCLs can provide additional protection against leaks and breaches in the tailings dam liner system.


3: The use of remote monitoring and sensor technology provides a new level of visibility into the condition of tailings dams and their liner systems. This information can identify potential problems early on, allowing operators to proactively address them before they become critical.
